I peeked out from under an elbow, my hands still gripping the sides of my head as I uncurled myself from the floor.
‘Oops!’ She spoke from behind her fingers as she surveyed the damage, her eyes drawn upwards to the squeak of a ceiling fan swinging to and fro.
‘Yeah, you could say that’
This was going to be the best music presentation ever, if we could just avoid breaking the whole school.
‘What now?’ she asked.
‘We try it in a lower key?’
She laughed, flicking water at me with her tail. ‘Go on then piano boy.’

Hello Friday Fictioneers! My two year old has stopped having an afternoon nap so I’ve lost my Wednesday writing window! I’ve also been doing Camp NANOWRIMO so working hard on my WIP- eek!
Anyway I’ve managed it this week – a bit of a rush job 😃 I’ll try get to read as many of yours as I can.
Not heard of Friday Fictioneers? It’s a weekly writing challenge hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The idea is to write a short story (just 100 words) based on the photo prompt provided.

Aw, I love this! Her voice breaking the fan. What is she? Is she a cat? A mermaid sitting in a bath next to the piano? I must know. Ha.

I didn’t understand why she had to have a tail. I think the story would work better without it

Perhaps so… I just saw a singing mermaid as I began writing 😃

Wonderful story. Love the narrator. I sort of seen a little dog because I love dogs but she’s probably another animal or someone else with a tail. In any case loved the story.

Or a fish seeing as it’s scales. Just a thought. Probably not. But it’s very intriguing.

This is a great example of how you can think something is obvious and it’s really not 🙂 Sorry – not enough words for more hints but as she spoke and had a tail which she splashed water with, I was hoping you might see a mermaid 😃 Some did of course 🙂 Good lesson for me .
Thanks for reading and your lovely comments x

I really enjoyed that once I’d worked out what was going on. I think having a mermaid singing in a school concert is a wonderful idea. As you say – Random! I think the main lesson from the comments is probably that many people don’t read the title! Your surreal story has made me smile!

A siren’s song is dangerous. Would make a great musical performance. What an imaginative tail.

That tail had me at the end!
Your two year old has stopped napping? My three year old granddaughter still needs hers!

Dear Anna,
Reading one of your comments, it put me in mind of the movie Splash from the 80’s. That’s going to be some concert. Cute story.

I was in a glee club in grammar school. The Brothers never let us have a mermaid for a soloist. I’m glad this school is willing to try something new..

Hey Mermaids have scales and music has scales. I’ve just noticed the really neat word play.

I love this whacky story and the fact they went so high they fell off the scale. I would love to attend their presentation.

I put the tail together with the water and deduced a singing mermaid. Am I close?
